The Atlanta chapters George Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund has increased the amount of funds allocated for awards for the 2014/15 academic year. According to Guidance Counselor, Sonia Watson, “this is going to make so many more students and their parents happy.”

While on the island recently, the fund’s manager, Dr. Glen Laman delivered checks to Principal Dave Myrie and the Bursar of the University of the West Indies to cover awards for the upcoming academic year.

The scholarship fund’s goal is to assist current students at Kingston College as well as Old Boys with their educational expenses. There are two components to the fund: the student scholarship and the Old Boys’ Scholarship.

Student Awards
For the 2014 / 15 academic year the scholarship Fund has increased the number of KC student awards from 10 to 30.  These awards are given to boys currently attending KC who are selected by a committee at Kingston College.

Old Boy Awards
The fund also makes awards to old boys attending university.   The recipients of the 2014 -15 Old Boy Awards were announced recently. They are Yakum Fitz-Henley and Yuchen Moodie.  Both are currently enrolled at the University of the West Indies Mona and received awards of US$1,000 each.

Yakum is currently enrolled in the UWI Faculty of Law and plans to specialize in International Law.   Yuchen is a second year student at UWI majoring in History.

The Fund
Since its inception, the George Thompson Memorial Scholarship Fund has provided awards to over 45 students at KC and 15 old boys attending university.

The fund was established in honor of legendary KC and Jamaica football coach George Thompson who died in July of 2008.
