On Saturday August 17, 2014, double lines formed early in the cool afternoon sun at the World's Fair Marina, located near LaGuardia Airport in Queens NY. The looks of expectation were evident on the faces of our supporters, friends and Alumni - all informally dressed but looking elegant as usual in their various school colors.

This year we listened to our stake holders and supporters and engaged the bigger, more luxurious Skyline Princess. We had no intentions of leaving anyone behind (again) so we waited patiently for the latecomers who had bought tickets way in advance and sailed off at 6:45 PM.

Alpha Academy, St. Hugh's and KC teamed up again and produced another stellar affair. Once we pulled up anchors, board members of the respective Alumni Associations got busy entertaining and attending to their guests. But from my observation the guests were right at home, making small talk with school mates from way back when. These social events are a testament of our strong cultural bond, roots and heritage… combining the best of both worlds - Food and Music.

Food - Fine Jamaican fare was the order of the night catered by Flavia Chin’s Caterers with her St. Hugh's crew and wonderfully assisted by the Alpha ladies. The serving got off to a late start but was well worth the wait. The food was tasty. Well done ladies! The cash bar was not manned by us so we had time to enjoy the evening with a bevy of females who out numbered the men 4 – 1. “A boat load of fine females” was one of the remarks heard out loud.

Music - The night belonged to Fortis DJ Prentice Williams and friends, of Soul Tone Disco. From the moment his crew boarded and set up, the music was thumping throughout the marina; prompting folks boarding in the adjacent bay to abandon their ship. Sadly they could not be accommodated because the Princess was "sold out." All three decks were jam packed but it was the upper deck where the DJ booth was set up that was carrying the full swing as we sailed around the greatest city in the world. At one point, DJ Prentice dropped Mr. Vegas` “I am blessed” and the boat nearly “tun ova.” “When I wake up in the morning and I lay my head to rest, every day of my life I am blessed.”

Yes, my Fortis brothers we are truly blessed indeed. Thanks to you, our supporters, family and friends. Special thanks to our sponsors: Moet Hennessy’s Celia Boothe, Flavia Chin’s Caterers & LaRoose Catering Hall; Restaurants: The Door & Henrica`s. Tower Isle`s Patties, Caribbean Foods Delight, Sabrina’s Delight, Mrs. Maxwell`s Bakery, Bella Spa & Supplies (Jamaica), Ajamu Photography and Sydney’s Delight.

By the grace of God - see you next year!
