I met Everton shortly after the formation of the KCOBA Atlanta chapter in Stone Mountain about 20 years ago. All the brothers were cordial but Ever, as he became known to me, was especially inviting and took the time to make me feel welcome and a part of the group.
Over the years, we became close and he was like an older brother to me, always available and willing to disburse some guidance and knowledge from his vast repertoire of experiences. In this Ever was a straight shooter and would tell you like it was, without any concern whether or not that was what you wanted to hear.
He became the Godfather of my older daughter, Amore in 2002. She was an avid gymnast at an early age and we would travel all over the southeast to compete. Ever would always enquire about how she was performing and he and his lovely wife Arlene, actually made it to a couple of her local meets to support her.
Ever had a passion for KC and worked tirelessly as the President of KCOBA for several terms some years ago. I seem to recall us having the global KC Old Boys summit in Atlanta for the first time under his leadership and us bringing Fab 5 and Lovindeer for a summer banquet fundraiser that was one of the most entertaining we have ever had. That session is still talked about fondly today.
As some of you might know, Ever became a published author last year and I bought a copy of his book, “Black Man Rising” (A great read by the way) on Amazon with the intention of having him autograph it for me the next time we met. Of course, the specter of the Covid-19 pandemic put a damper on my plans and here we are.
Ever was a giant of a man (pun intended), who was passionate about his beliefs and his causes. He was a brother, a mentor and a friend to me. I will miss our chats, his guidance, suggestions, and advice sessions.
I will miss him dearly but I know he is in a better place. My sincerest condolences to Arlene and the children. Rest assured Arlene, you will always be a part of the family and we will forever be here for you.
Rest on Ever, now we have another angel to cheer us on from on high.
