Medical Class of ’81: Serving Humankind

A fundamental part of the Fortis ethos is service, service to the school, service to classmates, service to country and service to humankind. In this profile we present biographical sketches of 7 members of Class of 81 who have chosen medicine as their area of service to humankind.

Those of us who knew them in their formative Fortis days are unsurprised by what they have accomplished including the areas of specialization in which they have chosen to serve. What remains unchanging is their unyielding commitment to excellence.

Their areas of specialization and service vary from bariatric surgery to pediatric nephrology to ophthalmology, general surgery, emergency medicine and oncology.

Earl Lincoln Noyan, MD is a highly experienced and board-certified bariatric surgeon, currently serving as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, NJ, and at CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, NJ. He has a passion for helping his patients achieve their weight loss goals and improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Dr. Noyan completed his residency in general surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, where he gained extensive training and expertise in laparoscopic surgical techniques. He then pursued further fellowship training specializing in laparoscopy and bariatric surgery, which has been his area of focus for many years.

As a regular member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons (ASBS), Dr. Noyan stays up to date with the latest advances and best practices in bariatric surgery. He is known for his exceptional surgical skills, attention to detail, and commitment to providing long-term patient support and follow-up medical advice.

Dr. Noyan's dedication and expertise have earned him numerous accolades, including the designation of Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). This designation recognizes surgical programs that have a demonstrated track record of favorable outcomes in bariatric surgery. Dr. Noyan underwent a series of rigorous site inspections, during which all aspects of his program's surgical processes were closely examined, and data on health outcomes was collected.

Dr. Noyan's passion for helping his patients stems from the growing obesity epidemic in the United States, which is closely linked to serious health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. With bariatric surgery, he believes that his patients can manage these conditions effectively and improve their overall quality of life.

Dr. Noyan's commitment to excellence in bariatric surgery is a testament to his dedication to his patients and his passion for improving their health and wellbeing. Away from his work, he attended Kingston College from 1975 to 1983, and enjoys spending time with his family and pursuing his hobbies.

Dr. Kevin Brown is a highly respected Consultant General Surgeon in Jamaica. He was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, to a family of an Economist and a Teacher. He attended Franklyn Town Primary School where he received a Government Scholarship to Kingston College where he played School Challenge Quiz from 1981 to 1983 and represented KC in chess with distinction from 1978- 1983.

Dr. Brown earned his MBBS and DM in Surgery from the University of the West Indies at Mona, where he developed his passion for medicine and surgery. He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since 2000. He has served patients in several communities and institutions including Windward Medical Centre from 1991 and Andrews Memorial Hospital from 2000. He has also served on several executives of the Association of Surgeons in Jamaica. He is passionate about service and advocates for persons with special needs and the vulnerable in society. A dedicated public servant, he has worked at government hospitals including Kingston Public Hospital and Spanish Town Hospital and he continues to serve the public

He is highly skilled in various surgical procedures and has a reputation for his professionalism, expertise, and compassionate patient care. Dr. Brown is committed to continuing education and staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in his field, which has helped him provide the highest quality of care for his patients.

He also represented Jamaica in chess at cadet, junior and absolute levels with noteworthy success from 1979 - 1992. He has been accorded National Master and Fide Candidate Master titles.

Dr. Brown is a devoted family man who is married to Patricia and they have three children. When he is not working, he enjoys playing chess and is a general sports enthusiast.

He also is a music aficionado and enjoys delving into history and philosophy. He is anchored by his Christian faith.

Dr. Garfield Oliver Forbes attended Holy Rosary Preparatory School, where he developed a strong work ethic and dedication to his studies. In 1976, he enrolled at Kingston College.

During his time at Kingston College, Forbes quickly established himself as a serious and dedicated student. He was known for his quiet determination and his willingness to go above and beyond in his studies.

After completing sixth form in 1983, Forbes went on to attend the University of the West Indies at Mona, where he pursued a degree in medicine. He excelled in his studies and developed a particular interest in oncology, the study and treatment of cancer.

After graduating with his MBBS degree, Forbes continued his training in oncology, focusing on the ethical treatment of cancer patients. He is deeply committed to ensuring that patients received the best possible care and that their rights and dignity were always respected.

Forbes went on to serve as a physician at the University of the West Indies Hospital and Kingston Public Hospital, where he gained a reputation for his compassionate and thorough care. He was known for taking the time to listen to his patients and for always going the extra mile to ensure that they received the care they needed.

Throughout his career, Forbes has remained dedicated to advancing the field of oncology and improving the lives of cancer patients. He was a strong advocate for patient rights and ethical treatment practices, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that all patients received the best possible care.

Dr. Moses Gallow is a highly respected physician who has made significant contributions to healthcare in the Cayman Islands. He currently works in the Cayman Island Health Service, where he has established a reputation for his expert medical care and dedication to his patients. Moses attended Kingston College from 1976 to 1983, where he excelled in academics and was actively involved in various extracurricular activities.

He grew up in a family that emphasized the importance of education and service to others. And is one of five brothers who attended Kingston College. After completing his secondary education at Kingston College, Moses went on to pursue a career in medicine.

He attended the University of the West Indies, where he earned his medical degree. Moses' passion for helping others, combined with his interest in medicine, led him to specialize in family medicine. He completed his residency at a hospital in Kingston, where he gained valuable experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of medical conditions.

Moses has been practicing medicine for over 20 years, during which time he has become highly skilled in providing comprehensive medical care to his patients. He is known for his compassionate and patient-centered approach to care, which has earned him the trust and respect of his patients and colleagues alike.

Aside from his work as a physician, Moses is actively involved in his community. He volunteers his time and expertise to local organizations that support underserved communities, and he also serves as a mentor to aspiring medical professionals.

In his free time, Moses enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and participating in outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing. He is also an avid sports fan and enjoys following his favorite teams.

Dr. Ashraf H. Beharrie is a highly regarded pediatric nephrologist based in Plantation, Florida. He has established a reputation for his compassionate and expert care of children with kidney-related disorders. Ashraf is affiliated with several hospitals in the area, including Broward Health Medical Center and Baptist Health West Kendall Baptist Hospital.

Ashraf was born on June 23, 1965, in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in a large family, with parents who instilled in him the importance of education and service to others. Ashraf attended Kingston College from 1976 to 1983, where he excelled in academics and was actively involved in various extracurricular activities.

After completing his secondary education, Ashraf went on to pursue a career in medicine. He attended the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences, where he earned his medical degree. Ashraf's passion for helping others, combined with his interest in nephrology, led him to specialize in pediatric nephrology.

Ashraf has been practicing for over 20 years, during which time he has become highly skilled in diagnosing and treating kidney-related disorders in children. He is known for his compassionate and patient-centered approach to care, which has earned him the trust and respect of his patients and colleagues.

Aside from his work as a physician, Ashraf is actively involved in his community. He volunteers his time and expertise to local organizations that support children with chronic illnesses and their families. Ashraf also serves as a mentor to aspiring medical professionals, helping to inspire and guide the next generation of healthcare providers.

Dr. Michael Washington was born on November 17, 1965 in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in a family of four, with parents who instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. Michael attended Alpha Primary School in Kingston and later went on to attend Kingston College, where he graduated in 198 1 and finished sixth form in 1983.

During his time at Kingston College, Michael was actively involved in various extracurricular activities. He was a member of the Chess team/club from 1976 to 1981, which helped to nurture his love for strategy and problem-solving. He was also a member of the KC Chapel Choir from 1976 to 1979, where he developed his appreciation for music.

Michael was also a member of the Hockey squad in 1981, which gave him the opportunity to develop his physical fitness and teamwork skills. After completing his secondary education, Michael attended the University of the West Indies from 1981 to 1985, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Michael decided to pursue a career in medicine. He attended the University of the West Indies from 1990 to 1996, where he earned a degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). He then went on to become a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth).

Michael has extensive experience in Ophthalmology, with a particular interest in emergency care. He has worked extensively all over the UK, including in Manchester and Liverpool, before eventually settling in North Wales. Michael's passion for his work and dedication to his patients have earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and patients alike.

Outside of work, Michael enjoys a range of hobbies, including music, track and field, football, and chess. He occasionally writes music for media and video games.

Dr. Eric Williams is a highly regarded physician and surgeon, known for his expertise in emergency medicine. He is currently working as a consultant and associate lecturer in his field, where he continues to inspire and educate students with his knowledge and experience.

Dr. Williams began his academic journey at Kingston College, where he attended high school from 1976 to 1983. From there, he went on to attend the prestigious University of the West Indies, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with honors. He then went on to earn his medical degree (MBBS) from the same university, and later a Master of Science with distinction.

Dr. Williams continued his education by pursuing a Doctorate in Medicine in Emergency Medicine from the University of the West Indies, where he specialized in unusual and rare cases in the field. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Williams has been recognized for his outstanding academic achievements and contributions to the field of emergency medicine.

After completing his education, Dr. Williams went on to work as a physician and surgeon in various hospitals and clinics throughout the Caribbean, where he gained extensive experience in emergency medicine. He has been involved in numerous emergency cases, from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions, and has been instrumental in saving countless lives.

As a consultant and associate lecturer in his field, Dr. Williams is highly respected by his colleagues and students alike. He is known for his exceptional bedside manner, his ability to inspire and motivate students, and his passion for emergency medicine.

In addition to his work as a physician and surgeon, Dr. Williams is also involved in research in his field. His research interests include unusual and rare cases in emergency medicine, and he has published several articles on the topic in various academic journals.
