After two decades of dedicated service, Dr. Robert Wan, CD, officially concluded his tenure as Chairman of the Kingston College Chapel Choir on November 30, 2025. His departure marks the end of an era defined by vision, discipline, and remarkable organizational growth.

Dr. Wan's leadership began modestly some 20 years ago, without great fanfare. However, what followed was a steady and intentional transformation of the choir into one of Jamaica's most respected musical institutions. Bringing a structured management approach, he introduced organizational discipline, strategic planning, and accountability to the choir's operations—elements that would become hallmarks of its success.

Deeply committed to the choir's mission, Dr. Wan maintained a constant presence, whether physically attending performances or supporting from afar. Among his most cherished moments was the choir's performance in Washington, D.C., celebrating Jamaica's 50th anniversary at the Washington National Cathedral. Sharing that milestone with his close friend and fellow Kingston College Old Boy, Teddy McCook, made the occasion even more meaningful.

Under his leadership, the choir's governance evolved significantly. Monthly meetings with formal agendas became standard practice, ensuring transparency and effective decision-making. He established a liaison role between the choir and the school administration, working closely with the Deputy Headmistress, Madam Hall, to maintain alignment with the institution's leadership. Embracing technology early, Dr. Wan also introduced virtual meetings, enabling broader participation from board members and stakeholders across the globe.

Dr. Wan's philosophy centered on efficiency, effectiveness, and fiscal responsibility—principles that guided every aspect of the choir's operations. He elevated the choir from a traditional classical ensemble into a highly sought-after performing group, in demand across Jamaica. His insistence on excellence cultivated a culture where the choir consistently performed at the highest level, earning recognition as the top-ranked choir in Jamaica over several years.

A skilled fundraiser, Dr. Wan secured major corporate sponsorships, including support from NCB, the Kingston College Lodge, and the Chase Foundation. His ability to inspire investment extended to national institutions such as the Governor General's office and the Bank of Jamaica. Recognizing the choir's growing stature, he formalized a performance fee structure—transitioning the choir from voluntary appearances to a professional organization with defined operational costs. Today, this standard is widely accepted.

His influence extended beyond Jamaica's shores. Dr. Wan actively engaged overseas alumni, integrating them into the choir's support network. Notably, he spearheaded an initiative to have all six overseas chapters of the Kingston College Alumni Associations sponsor the annual Christmas Choral Recital, strengthening global ties within the KC community.

Perhaps most significantly, Dr. Wan helped shape the choir's artistic excellence. Through his partnership with Choir Director Audley Davidson, the ensemble achieved a level of musical quality that captivated audiences, including some of Jamaica's leading entertainers. A memorable example was veteran musician Boris Gardiner's reaction after hearing the choir perform at the funeral of Kirkland Douglas—a testament to the choir's refined sound and emotional impact.

Though officially retired, Dr. Wan remains actively involved, offering guidance and consultancy to the management team and its new leader, Lloyd McEwan Jr. He leaves behind a choir that is not only financially stable but also structurally sound and artistically thriving. With a capable leadership team in place, including Choir Director Audley Davidson, the foundation he built ensures continued excellence.

Dr. Robert Wan has passed the torch with distinction. His legacy is one of transformation, stewardship, and enduring commitment—ensuring that the Kingston College Chapel Choir will continue to inspire for generations to come.
