The Kingston College fraternity joins Jamaica in mourning the passing of one of its most accomplished sons, Senator Oswald Gaskell Harding, OJ, CD, KC, who died on June 24, 2026, at the age of 90.

A respected attorney, parliamentarian, academic, and statesman, Harding leaves behind a remarkable legacy of public service and intellectual achievement that spanned more than five decades.

Born on November 3, 1935, in Kingston, Jamaica, Harding grew up on Oxford Street in Western Kingston and received his early education at Kingston College, where the foundation was laid for a life characterized by scholarship, leadership, and service.

He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University, pursued further studies at the University of London, and qualified as an attorney-at-law. Demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning, he later earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of the West Indies, Mona.

A dedicated member of the Jamaica Labour Party, Harding made history as the longest-serving senator in Jamaica's parliamentary history. Appointed to the Senate in 1977, he served continuously until 2002, providing distinguished leadership and invaluable counsel during some of the nation's most significant political periods.

His parliamentary career was marked by several historic achievements. He became the first individual to serve two non-consecutive terms as President of the Senate, holding that office from 1980 to 1984 and again from 2007 to 2011. During the administration of Prime Minister Edward Seaga, Harding served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice from 1986 to 1989. He also held the positions of Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Leader of Government Business in the Senate. Following the change of government in 1989, he continued his service to the nation as Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate.

Although he contested parliamentary seats on three occasions—in 1976, 1993, and 1997—his greatest impact came through his legislative leadership and commitment to strengthening Jamaica's democratic institutions.

Following his retirement from the Senate in 2011, Harding turned his attention to higher education. As Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology, Jamaica, he played a pivotal role in establishing and developing the faculty, helping to shape a new generation of legal professionals.

Beyond politics and academia, Harding was a noted patron of the arts and an avid collector whose appreciation for Jamaican culture reflected his broad intellectual interests. In 2018, he shared the story of his extraordinary life through his autobiography, Grandson of Essie: The Oswald Harding Story .

Throughout his life, Senator Harding exemplified the Kingston College motto, Fortis Cadere, Cedere Non Potest—"The Brave May Fall, But Never Yield." His unwavering commitment to public service, education, justice, and national development earned him the respect of colleagues across political divides and the admiration of generations of Jamaicans.
