Kingston College has been taking Washington, DC by storm this year.

First, the KC Chapel Choir travelled there and mesmerized audiences at Washington National Cathedral’s Annual Flower Mart Festival which this  year featured Jamaican history, cuisine, artists and performers.

This was followed a few weeks later by Gifton Wright’s stellar performance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition where he enchanted the audience with both his spelling and his deportment.

More recently, we had the long awaited announcement that our very own Dr. Stephen Vasciannie will be moving to the capital city as Jamaica’s Ambassador to the US and permanent representative to the Organization of American States.

We are very excited for the new ambassador and wish him all success in his new position.  Moving is one of the most stressful life events. He will be uprooting his wife Lisa and their two sons to take up residence in a new country.

At the same time, we will miss him as Chairman of KC’s Board of Governors. We appreciate all his efforts to improve our alma mater. Knowing the Old Boys as we all do, I am sure he had to contend with his share of slings and arrows. However, he has been a symbol of assurance and grace.

In a move to encourage greater transparency in school affairs, he recently published the annual budget allocations. It is hoped that this will lead to a better understanding of the real needs and therefore the formulation of effective strategies to meet them.

As Stephen is flying the KC flag in Washington, DC lets also keep it flying high in Jamaica and everywhere else.

Happy reading!
