Super Valu Fresh Foods recently donated 100 gift baskets for KC’s teachers. This was in support of the school’s relief effort in the Coronavirus pandemic that has gripped the world for months now.
Principal Dave Myrie was on hand to receive the gift baskets on behalf of the teachers. The store’s Managing Director Sing Chin presented the baskets.
Sing is a KC Old boy. He attended from 1959-1963.
According to Principal Myrie, “Mr Sing Chin is one of those old boys who has been quietly supporting the school over the years. His deep love for the school is not displayed by words but by his actions. He has also committed to significantly updating the PA/Audio system in the chapel.”
He is devoted to Kingston College and still remembers the impact his teachers back in the day had on him. Some may recall a student who rode a motorcycle to school – that was Sing. Teachers he still remembers include Mr. Aubyn-Hay who taught Bible Knowledge, Mr. Campbell in Biology and Mr. Baugh and Mr. Jones.
Chin left school after the 4th form at age 15 to start working and therefore did not graduate. His first job was at Joseph’s Department Store on Orange Street in Downtown Kingston where he sold cloth by the pound. He then moved on to Hand Arnold, a food distribution company. In 1970, while working as a sales representative for T. Geddes Grant he came across a shop in Havendale that was available for lease and went into business for himself.
He would go on to start other businesses including Super Valu Foods and a partnership, Progressive Grocers, which operates supermarkets across the island.
Last year his family surprised him with a special “graduation” ceremony at KC. During the ceremony, he received an honorary diploma and was recognized for his support and donations to KC.
