The Jamaican community in the United States and at home mourns the passing
of Mrs. Merrill Chevannes, who transitioned peacefully at
the remarkable age of 93. Born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica,
Merrill lived a full and vibrant life that spanned more than nine decades
and touched countless hearts.
After leaving Jamaica, Merrill made the United States her home for over 60
years, living in New York, Atlanta, and finally
Tallahassee
, where she spent her later years surrounded by family and friends. A
devoted mother, she is survived by her two daughters,
Lavern "Toni" Laman
, who is married to Dr. Glen Laman, former president of the
Kingston College Old Boys' Association (Georgia Chapter),
and Marcia Guthrie. Her beloved son Wesley
predeceased her.
Merrill was widely known for her
warm hospitality and generous spirit
. Her home was affectionately known as "The Hub"-a fitting name for
a place where everyone felt welcome, and where there was always something
delicious on the stove. Whether it was family, friends, or someone simply
stopping by, Merrill made sure no one ever left hungry. It certainly helped
that her husband was a talented chef, but it was Merrill's love and warmth
that made their home the heart of every gathering.
Her generosity extended well beyond her family. The
Kingston College Old Boys' Association (KCOBA)
remembers her fondly for her
unwavering support and active participation
at many of their functions. Always ready to lend a helping hand, she could
be found assisting with
food preparation, serving, and ensuring everyone felt at home
. Her infectious smile and quick wit brought laughter and joy to every event
she attended.
Merrill also held a special place among the
St. Hugh's High School Alumnae Association in Atlanta
, where she was a cherished presence at numerous events. Her warmth, humor,
and boundless kindness made her a beloved figure in both the KC and St.
Hugh's communities-brother and sister schools that have long shared friendly
ties and mutual respect.
Those closest to her describe Merrill as a woman who
radiated kindness and compassion
. Her son-in-law Glen affectionately recalls her as
"the greatest mother-in-law ever."
When he first met her-newly arrived in the United States and unemployed-she
surprised him with a gift of money, a gesture that perfectly captured her
generosity and caring nature.
Her sisters fondly remember her for
always thinking about others, especially children
, and for her love of telling jokes and bringing laughter
wherever she went. Merrill's humor, compassion, and nurturing heart defined
her life and left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
As her family and friends celebrate her life, they remember not only a woman
of strength and grace, but one whose
love of people, laughter, and food
created a legacy of joy that will continue to warm hearts for generations.
Merrill Chevannes will be remembered as she lived-
with love, laughter, generosity, and an open heart.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
